A journey to be celebrated
Nov 10, 2023
In October this year, we celebrated twenty years of the Buddha Sanctuary in Broome.
The Buddha Sanctuary was born from a deeply felt wish - to anchor loving, harmonious energy in and around the town of Broome. I wanted to provide a space that was open to all, where people could visit for quiet reflection and spiritual practise, and I’d hoped that one day, it would grow to be a place where community came together to feel lighter, brighter and happier.
One of the highlights for me when building the space (between April and October 2003) was seeing Buddha Guan Yin take her place as she rests today. Guan Yin is the Buddhist deity of unconditional love, grace, mercy and compassion and while I don’t strictly follow one religious belief (more the universal aspects of many) I felt it was these qualities the area needed most. And to some extent, what humanity most needed then, as we do today.
Over the years, I have regularly returned to the Buddha Sanctuary to guide meditations and offer energy healing, but my recent trip in October, to mark the twentieth anniversary, was something quite special.
It was an opportunity for me to reflect on how the space has evolved over time – the greenery that’s come alive and the changes we’ve made to the space to accommodate the seasons. I also felt a deep sense of appreciation for the community, and the many people that have cared for Buddha Guan Yin throughout her journey.
During the celebrations, someone close to the space offered genuine words of appreciation that have stayed with me. She said that Buddha’s energy, of love, grace and compassion, while anchored in the Sanctuary, can be felt across the wider Kimberley region. I suppose it’s a bit like leaving a trail. When you fill up on love, peace and compassionate energy – you carry this with you, leaving traces for others along the way. It is my wish for humanity, that we have more places like the Buddha Sanctuary. Places that allow us to fill-up on life energy, so that we can then give more ‘life’, and more ‘goodness’ to our family, friends, neighbours and wider community.
With deep appreciation for our local community in Broome, and all the people who joined us to celebrate our twenty-year journey.
